History of Carnall Elementary
Carnall Elementary opened in 1962 as a replacement for Fort Smith Elementary School. Originally referred to as "the new South Fort Smith School" during the planning stages, the school was later named in honor of John Carnall, a prominent educator and influential figure in early Fort Smith. The new school featured 14 classrooms, a cafetorium, a health room, an office, and storage facilities.
Major Milestones in Carnall History
- 1962: Carnall Elementary was officially opened. However, its cafeteria was not yet complete, requiring students to bring their lunches. The old Fort Smith Elementary School remained open temporarily to manage increased enrollment.
- 1968: Basketball facilities were installed at Carnall, funded by community patrons, further enriching the school's offerings.
- 1984-1985: Enrollment declined, likely due to the surrounding area shifting from residential to industrial.
Who was John Carnall?
John Carnall, the school’s namesake, was a pioneering educator and community leader in Fort Smith. Born on January 9, 1819, near Warrenton, Virginia, Carnall moved to Fort Smith in the early 1840s. He began teaching in 1840, establishing a school that he later relocated to his home and eventually to a newly constructed building named Belle Grove.
In addition to his role as an educator, Carnall wore many hats: he was a chief deputy U.S. marshal, sheriff, politician, realtor, newspaper editor, and agriculturalist. His most significant contribution was his 13-year effort to secure land for public use, a feat that allowed the establishment of schools, a courthouse, a post office, and other public facilities on former military reservation land.
John Carnall married Frances Hunton Turner in 1843, and the couple raised nine children. His dedication to education and community development shaped the growth and prosperity of early Fort Smith. Today, Carnall Elementary carries forward his legacy of learning and public service.
